Day to Day

DAY TO DAY

The expert farm staff oversee that our horses get top quality care including daily physical checks, access to clean food and water at all times, along with a well-maintained living space. Our team includes the best in the business!

Each horse is thoughtfully partnered with their driver based on skill and chemistry. This allows for the horse and driver to develop a trusting relationship that lasts forever. This special relationship allows for the horses and drivers to predict one another’s reactions to any situation, creating the safest environment for operation. Victoria Carriage Tours safety record is so outstanding that no horse or human has ever been harmed in well over 100,000 hours of carriage operations.

Carriage horses' low impact work contributes to the lifespan of up to 10 years longer than the draft horse average, many of our horses have lived well into their 30’s! This means that we must plan to provide each horse with 5-10 years of retirement.

We honour and respect all of our horses, including those who are no longer working. Retired horses live out their lives with the herd and family who love them. Upon retirement they are also offered the opportunity to join the Horse Wisdom Farm Team.

While working, the horses are fed and watered regularly. Our skilled drivers are always monitoring the health, comfort, and well-being of their horse throughout the shift. All drivers are prepared for any situation and are trained in Emergency Equine First Aid. This training is provided in a clinic format by Dr. Danica Olenick of Swiftsure Equine Veterinary Services.

Victoria has a temperate climate which allows us to operate all year long. In the case of warmer days, we take care that our horses are cool and comfortable. We do this by ensuring all horses have access to clean water, electrolyte supplementation, and we hose our horses off with cool water between rides. Unlike dogs or cats, horses sweat to cool themselves down, so when a horse is sweating it is a good thing!
